Calvin Women earn a 1-0 victory
over Transylvania
August 31, 2008
ST. LOUIS, MO - After suffering a heart-breaking 3-2
overtime loss to nationally-ranked Washington University of St. Louis
the night before, Calvin (1-1-0) bounced back with a 1-0 victory over
Transylvania University of Kentucky Saturday evening. The game was part
of the Washington University Classic.
The only goal of the game came five-and-a-half minutes into the second
half as junior Emily Ottenhoff (Palos Heights, IL) ripped in a
half-volley after receiving a crossing pass from senior Ashley Bolen
(Urbana, IL).
Calvin nearly scored in the 72nd minute but a shot by senior Liz VanRees
(Western Michigan Christian HS) deflected off the crossbar and back into
the field of play.
Junior goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO) then came up with a key
save for the Knights with just 1:17 left in regulation, snagging a shot
headed in by an on-rushing Transylvania player.
Calvin finished the game with a 10-5 shots at goal advantage and held a
10-2 advantage in corner kicks. Junior Alyssa Bergsma and Sulzer
combined on the shutout with each player collecting two saves apiece.
VanRees led Calvin in shots at goal with three.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Aquinas at 4:00 p.m.
at Calvin's Zuidema Field.
